If you love to write, but you’re not yet sure what to write about, or who is going to read what you have to say, consider taking the 3 steps outlined below. These 3 simple steps will help you gain some clarity on which direction your writing should go so that you can find an attentive, engaged audience who keeps coming back to read more of what you have to say.
Step 1: Make a list of all the things you do really well. You know, the things your close friends and family are always getting your advice about.
Step 2: Ask all your close friends and family what kinds of things they think you do really well. (This really just helps you reinforce what you discovered on your own in Step 1.) *Here’s a tip*: Pose this question on Facebook or whatever social media channels you frequent to increase your responses and get your creative writing juices flowing with ideas.
Step 3: Decide which of those things you really LOVE, never get tired of talking about, and are passionate about sharing with the world – then start writing!
Seems too simple, doesn’t it?
When I started my first blog almost a decade ago, it took me MONTHS to hit publish on my first post. I could never decide what to write about or when. I quickly discovered that when I stopped trying to figure out what everyone wanted to read, and started writing on topics I was really passionate about, people loved reading what I had to say. They began to engage with me by asking questions and sharing their own ideas on the topics.
My biggest piece of advice to anyone who is just starting out with writing:
JUST START WRITING. Put your content out there. Let your topics change and develop as your passions and expertise do. Just start getting the words out of your head and into the “blog-o-sphere” (or wherever you decide to write) now.
Bottom line – if it’s content you love to write about, you can be sure it’s content your audience will love to read.
